Life Summary
St. Michael the Archangel is one of the most powerful and honored angels in Christian tradition. His name, Michael, means “Who is like God?”, expressing his role as a defender of God’s sovereignty.
In the Book of Daniel, Michael is described as a great prince who protects God’s people. In the Letter of Jude, he is called the Archangel and is shown contending with the devil. In the Book of Revelation, Michael leads the heavenly angels in battle against the dragon, identified as Satan, and defeats him and his rebellious angels.
Because of these biblical accounts, the Church has traditionally honored St. Michael as the defender of the faith, protector of God’s people, and leader of the heavenly army. He is often depicted wearing armor and carrying a sword, standing triumphantly over the defeated dragon.
Catholics commonly seek St. Michael’s intercession for protection from evil and temptation. He is also regarded as a special protector of the Church and a model of courage, humility, and complete loyalty to God.
