Life Summary
St. Joseph was the husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the earthly guardian of Jesus Christ. He was a descendant of King David and was chosen by God to care for Mary and the Child Jesus. Although Joseph is not recorded as speaking a single word in the Gospels, his life demonstrates faith, obedience, humility, courage, and silent service.
When Joseph discovered that Mary was expecting a child, he initially planned to divorce her quietly. However, an angel appeared to him in a dream and told him that the child had been conceived through the Holy Spirit. Joseph trusted God and took Mary as his wife.
Joseph protected Jesus from the danger posed by King Herod. After being warned in a dream, he took Mary and Jesus and fled to Egypt. Later, he returned with them to Nazareth, where he worked as a carpenter and provided for the Holy Family.
Joseph was also present when Jesus was presented in the Temple and when the twelve-year-old Jesus was found among the teachers in Jerusalem. After this, the Gospels become silent about Joseph, suggesting that he likely died before Jesus began His public ministry.
The Church honors St. Joseph as a model of fatherhood, faithful work, protection, and devotion to family. He is also the patron saint of the universal Church and is often invoked for the needs of families and workers.
