Life Summary
St. Raphael the Archangel is one of the seven archangels who stand before the throne of God, according to the Book of Tobit. His name, Raphael, means “God heals,” reflecting his special mission of bringing God’s healing and guidance to His people.
In the Book of Tobit, Raphael is sent by God to accompany Tobiah on a journey. Disguised as a human traveller named Azariah, Raphael guides Tobiah and protects him along the way. He also helps Tobiah overcome the evil spirit troubling Sarah, whom Tobiah later marries.
Raphael teaches Tobiah how to use parts of a fish to drive away the evil spirit and to heal his father Tobit, who had become blind. At the end of the story, Raphael reveals his true identity as an angel sent by God.
St. Raphael is therefore especially associated with healing, safe journeys, protection, marriage, and God’s loving guidance. His story reminds Christians that God sends His angels to accompany and assist His people according to His will.
