Life Summary

St. Peter, originally named Simon, was a fisherman from Galilee and one of the first disciples called by Jesus. Jesus gave him the name Peter, meaning “Rock” or Cephas, signifying the important role he would have in the Church.

Peter became a leading figure among the Twelve Apostles. Jesus entrusted him with the “keys of the kingdom of heaven” and gave him the mission of strengthening and shepherding His followers. Peter witnessed many important moments in Jesus’ life, including the Transfiguration and Jesus’ agony in the Garden of Gethsemane.

Although Peter was courageous and passionate, he also experienced human weakness. During Jesus’ Passion, Peter denied knowing Him three times. However, after the Resurrection, Jesus restored Peter and entrusted him with the mission to feed and shepherd His flock.

Peter became a powerful leader of the early Christian community and played a central role in spreading the Gospel. According to ancient Christian tradition, he eventually travelled to Rome, where he was martyred during the persecution of Christians under Emperor Nero, around AD 64. Tradition holds that he was crucified upside down, because he considered himself unworthy to die in the same manner as Jesus.

St. Peter is honored as the first Pope and as a foundational leader of the Church. His life reminds Christians that even when we fail, sincere repentance and faith can restore us to God’s service.
